2019 Chateau Routas, Coteaux Varois en Provence Rosé
At a time when the phrase ‘pale imitation’ seems to have been coined with rosés specifically in mind, to find a wine of this intensity and freshness at a price that doesn’t make you wince is very good news indeed. It is the cooling combination of altitude and proximity to the sea, in an area that experiences almost incessant sunshine, that enables the Provençal grapes to ripen fully but late, thus building up flavour throughout the long, hot summer. They can therefore be pressed immediately, without gaining much colour but still with good flavour, acidity and balance. Not many other regions can do the same. (And I wish they would stop trying, quite frankly.
Château Routas is a 290 ha estate that includes wheat fields and olive groves, which contribute to the biodiversity and therefore the general health of the vines. The main varietals are Cinsault and Grenache, with a little old-vine Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to add depth and structure. All varietals are destemmed and pressed, followed by cool maceration to allow settling, and then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks, after which the blending takes place.

2019 Coteaux Varois en Provence Rosé, Chateau Routas – £167.40 (list price)
46% Cinsault, 30% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon 13% alc
Pale straw colour with pink reflections. Very aromatic on the nose, with peach, strawberry, pear drops, acacia. Peach and pear on the palate. More weight and intensity than the 2018, a little tannin (presumably from the Cabernet) giving it grip and structure, but balanced by extra ripeness and a refreshing acidity. Medium long, fresh finish, ending cleanly. Goes with sunshine.
