Description

The 2009 Crianza is a step up, initially quite closed and oaky this opens up into a wine of great depth and richness. The grapes for this wine come from vines with an average age of 40 years, and then the wine is matured in French (80%) and American oak for 14 months.

Wine and cheese are a famed combination but it is rare to find both being produced by the same company. Páramo de Guzmán made their reputation, internationally, with one of the most sought after cheeses in Spain, a raw, sheep's milk cheese marinated in extra virgin olive oil which they have been producing for over 20 years, before turning their hand to winemaking. A natural transition given their location on the banks of the River Duero. They have 25 hectares of vineyards surrounding a modern, efficient winery and they have clearly bought the same attitude they have when producing award winning cheeses to their wine operation; quality first, second and third.

These are terrific wines, rich and enticing, the quality of the fruit is top drawer and the winemaking is as clean as a whistle which allows the natural minerality of the region to shine through - the newly released 2011Tinto Roble is 100% Tempranillo aged for 6 months in oak, just enough time to give the wine added depth and complexity, but not so long as to take away any of the fruits purity; a gorgeous, juicy Ribera.

I can't stress enough just how good these wines are, and what good value; they're not the cheapest but my goodness you get a lot of bangs for your bucks so we have to say well done to the cheese makers who could show a few better known wineries a thing or two if this wine is anything to go by. As a bonus we were offered small quantities of their larger formats we naturally accepted.
